How To Fill Your Swimming Pool With Water!

We usually recommend filling your swimming pool with water using a garden hose. Make sure there are no sharp edges on the hose end that could damage your swimming pool liner. You will place the end of the hose on the bottom of the hopper. As the pool is filling with water you may need to smooth out any wrinkles in the liner, before 2 inches of water covers them.

If you are filling your pool with a fire hydrant, tanker truck or any other high pressure source of water, you will still need to fill the hopper of the pool with 2 inches of water from a garden hose before the high pressure source is turned on. Make sure to direct the water from the high pressure source into the partially filled hopper. If the high pressure source of water is allowed to hit the hopper sides or bottom directly it can make impressions in the freshly trowled vermiculite under the liner and disturb the otherwise smooth pool area.

  1. For those first time pool owners, don’t forget to balance your pool and add the appropriate chemicals when filling up your pool. The water will turn green in a heart beat if you do not balance it.

I wish I had seen this article when we replaced our liner and refilled last year!! We have well water and didn’t want to drain our well so we had a water truck come in to fill us up. He started to do the fill and about ten seconds into it the liner popped and we had to stop! I figured that the compression of the water had compacted the existing sand we had and stretched the old liner to fit. So we had to stop and I rented a truck and bout a ton of sand from Home Depot. Once we had the new sand laid the water truck came back and filled us up. That was quite an experience and we can look back now and laugh at it.

I always put some conditioning tablets while I fill the pool. They tend to help ease the transition from “tap” water to fully balanced water that is great for swimming.

Anyone out there have any info on filling with well water? Our area fire depts are on ‘hold’ with water deliveries, and we don’t have any options. We’ve done it before, gradually, allowing the pump/well to rest. Seemed we had more trouble with the ph, too.
