How to setup and operate DE filters

By Team Royal - Updated On: 10/15/23

Precoating

Add the correct amount DE powder thought the skimmer as per your instructions on the filter or in the filter’s manual.

Filtering

Filtration starts once the filter has been precoated. Filter removes dirt form the pool water. As a result, the pressure will rise and flow will decrease. When pressure rises 7-10 psi above precoating pressure, it’s time to regenerate the filter.

Regeneration

Regeneration with bump handle

Turn pump off. Move the bump handle down slowly, then briskly up. Repeat 3-4 times. Turn on pump and it should resume near percoating pressure. There maybe a small increase in starting pressure which is completely normal.

Filter cleaning with bump handle

We recommend cleaning the filter once the pressure rises more than 10psi in less than a day or cloudy water retunes into the pool for more than 30 seconds after regeneration. To clean turn pump off, move bump handle down slowly, then up briskly, repeat 7-8 times. Open the vent valve and the filter drain (if the filter is below the water level you will need to close suction and return valves) allow all water and dirt to drain out completely. Once completely drained and with the drain open, run the pump for a few seconds. (filter below water level open the suction valve for a few seconds with the pump off will flush the unit) Close the drain and vent valve. If suction and return valves are closed open them now. Turn pump on and fill the filter with water and repeat the cleaning step. The filter is ready for precoating now.
