First Up: The Brush, Vacuum and Pump

Making sure that you have a sturdy and reliable pool cover on hand will save you the time, and general wear and tear on your pool for years to come. Take off your winter cover, and store it until next year. Take a good look at your pool. You may find it has a low water level, so add to it in order to bring it back to a proper level. Next up: managing the debris and dirt that found a way to cling to the walls of your pool during the winter months. Invest in a brush to keep the debris at bay, as well as a pump and filter (to keep your pool as pristine as you need it to be!) and scrub! Talk to a pool professional about the right pump for your budget, and some ways you can be more efficient with your pump usage.

Secondly: Know Your Water Levels

The second most important thing you need to know about keeping your pool in tip top shape is knowing what healthy pool levels are, and what they mean (so that you can maintain the right amount of chemicals each week for healthy, happy swimmers!) Keep some testing kits on hand, and then follow our guide:

  • The pH level should be between 7.4-7.6
  • Total alkalinity level should be between 80-100 ppm
  • Chlorine level should be between 2.0-4.0 ppm
  • Cyanuric acid levels (hardness) should be between 30 to 50 ppm

Testing kits are a simple way for you to test the pH, chlorine and alkaline levels in your pool. Use daily as needed (especially in the hot summer months, when your pool requires more chemicals than usual), and stock up. Once you balance your pool with the chemicals needed, you may find that a shock treatment helps to maintain a healthy pH level. Your Royal Pool professionals can help you to quickly get your pool ready for the swimming season—with everything you need to do it in one convenient place!
